Medicare Supplement Plans & Medigap Policies | Erie, PA

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, is a term for policies that help fill “gaps” in the Original Medicare plan. While Original Medicare covers many health care services and supplies, a Medigap policy can help pay any remaining costs, including copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. In fact, some Medigap policies even cover services that Original Medicare does not, such as medical care when traveling outside of the U.S.

It is important to note that in order to qualify for a Medigap policy, you must already have Medicare Part A and Part B, and you will be paying a monthly premium in addition to your current Part B premium. Medigap policies are not compatible with Medicare Advantage Plans unless you are switching back to Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans | HMO, PPO, SNP, & More

A Medicare Advantage Plan is an alternative type of Medicare plan that contracts with Medicare to provide all Part A and Part B benefits. Most Medicare Advantage Plans also offer some form of prescription drug and Medicare service coverage. The most common types of Medicare Advantage Plans (not including HMO Point of Service or Medicare Medical Savings Account Plan) include:

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans
  • Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans
  • Special Needs Plans (SNPs)

Prescription Drug Plans for Those Who Qualify

In order to obtain prescription coverage with an Original Medicare plan, you’ll need to purchase a pharmacy plan, also known as a Medicare Part D plan. While every Medicare Part D plan must at least offer a standard level of coverage set by Medicare, the actual prescription drugs they cover can vary and are determined by the “tiers” these drugs are separated by on each plan’s formulary. Understanding what prescriptions Medicare does or does not cover can be confusing, but at Calvert Pearson, we excel at navigating these plans for our clients. We can help you find and customize the best pharmacy plan for your current prescriptions.
